Immigration Reform (Lite) Passed
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Immigration, LegislationThere will be no true reform until we can confidently secure our borders. Whether that’s a fence or thousands more officers stationed along the border, all of this legislation may not matter a lick until we stem the flow of illegals.
And yet, this is a bipartisan reform bill that Bush will most likely sign.
WASHINGTON (AP) – Key senators in both parties announced agreement with the White House Thursday on an immigration overhaul that would grant quick legal status to millions of illegal immigrants already in the U.S. and fortify the border. The plan would create a temporary worker program to bring new arrivals to the U.S. A separate program would cover agricultural workers. New high-tech enforcement measures also would be instituted to verify that workers are here legally.
The compromise came after weeks of painstaking closed-door negotiations that brought the most liberal Democrats and the most conservative Republicans together with President Bush’s Cabinet officers to produce a highly complex measure that carries heavy political consequences.
And we’re reminded what politics is all about from Ted Kennedy…
“Politics is the art of the possible, and the agreement we just reached is the best possible chance we will have in years to secure our borders and bring millions of people out of the shadows and into the sunshine of America,” Kennedy said.
But I don’t care what they say. This is amnesty. But do know I’m for amnesty…AFTER you secure the borders. You can’t do it before because that’s just going to encourage more law breaking.
In the end, it’s a grand experiment and I hope it works out, if for no other reason than to allow workers to lift themselves up and contribute to the economy is a real way.
Let’s hope they’re right, para todos motivo.

I respectfully disagree with you on some of what you say. True, I see it as amnesty as well. Sure it’s packaged up as something else so as to confuse the unsuspecting American citizen, but amnesty nonetheless.
I even agree with you that it would lift up these “workers”, but that’s not our concern as American citizens. That may sound cold, but truthfully, that’s not what we’re here to do. We should instead protect our borders, ship criminals back home, hold their own governments responsible for dealing with them, and remove any temptation that would encourage illegal immigrants to either come here or those that are here to stay.
Our culture is dying because our politicians are focusing on their own personal gain if they “free these people from their country of origin”. Excuse me? Legal immigration I’m fine with, but it’s the illegal ones and their sympathizers that are to blame for claiming they have rights to be here when they have broken the law to do it.
Sorry for the rant. I’m just rather passionate about my country and how it’s being abused. I’m not saying it’s without blame – gosh, no. But we don’t have to help it along the road to its demise by allowing criminals to dictate their demands to us. :)
