Obama Winning Facebook Race
By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, McCain, TechnologyOne of the “not really a story†stories circulating today is that John McCain has launched his first Facebook application. Yeah, I know, exciting stuff.
But what grabbed me in the story was this little factoid: On Facebook, Barack Obama has 1,000,400 supporters while John McCain has 147,000. This tells me two things: 1) Obama has done a far better job leveraging Web 2.0 technology and 2) McCain’s supporters are less likely to use Facebook.
What I don’t know is if this is a real advantage for Obama. Certainly, his superior organizational abilities helped him win the Democratic nomination, but can Facebook and like technologies be a difference maker in the broader general election? We’ll see.

If watch sales of Barack Obama watches are any indication then this is a landslide. He’s outselling McCain 10 to 1 on our website. http://www.electionwatches.com We have an ongoing poll.

Facebook and similar technologies are disproportionately effective among the younger segment of the population. If Obama’s campaign continues its success with them, including turning out the vote in a group that has a history of low voter turnout it can be a huge factor in a close election.

What Jim S said. Also, perhaps to belabor the obvious, this is likely a strong harbinger of campaigns to come. Anyone even remotely interested in joining the 2012 campaign is probably (or at least should be) following the Facebook front of the campaign to get an idea of what does and doesn’t work there.
