What Is Systems Engineering and Why Is It Important?

In 2017, there were about 3,500 people who graduated with their systems engineering degree.

Even though this isn’t a lot of people, they understand that systems engineering is a great process to use for developing any system.

But what is systems engineering? And what are the benefits? Keep reading to find out everything you need to know!

What is Systems Engineering?

To understand systems engineering more, you have to understand that it is a process used to create a successful system in any kind of discipline. People can use it in the military, simulation, or even in medical fields. This was first defined in 1950, and it was used to help develop defense systems that were large.

From then on, it started spreading to other disciplines as people realized that it was a process that worked.

To do this, first, you have to define what your customer needs. How will the product or system function? Consider the technical and business needs of your customer as well.

With those answers in mind, you can use this engineering to make a holistic design. This design will make sure you provide a good quality product that the user will be able to use easily.

In addition to creating a good product that is of high quality, the goal of systems engineering is to also make sure that you create a system on schedule and within the budget. You should define the budget and effort before the project starts and use that as a guideline for your project.

Why Should You Use It?

You might think that you already do something like this process, so you might think that there’s no reason to implement it. But there are actually many benefits of systems engineering.

When you have a process like this, you have a larger chance of developing your system or product. And you have a chance of making sure that you do it within budget and also deliver a good quality item to your customer.

Because of this, it will reduce the risk of running into any scheduling issues. It will make sure that everything is done on time, which will also help to make sure that you don’t run over your budget to make sure that you can still make a profit.

Because of this, it can help improve aspects in your business like having project cycles that are shorter, having better documentation and history, having improved stakeholder participation, and having verified functionality of your system or product.

There are many studies that show that this works, and it’s been tried and tested. Most times, it’s been proven effective.

In a larger market, more and more customers are starting to make more demands and customizations. With a “need-it-now” attitude, many lifecycles for projects are also becoming shorter.

Steps to Use System Engineering

If you’re interested in using the systems engineering process, there are seven main steps to follow.

You can tailor these a little bit to fit your needs, but these are good guidelines if you’re a beginner.

1. Understand the Problem

First, you need to find a problem with your process. Figure out how it’s affecting your product, and then figure out how you can measure the progress.

This is kind of the time to brainstorm and figure out how to implement this process.

2. Look for Other Solutions

You may also want to try doing a little bit of brainstorming and think if you can find any alternative solutions. Try and use processes that are already working mostly, so see if you can just tweak those.

Figure out how to choose which process is the best option for you and make documentation of it.

3. Agree on a System Architecture

Once you’ve started brainstorming, agree on part of your system architecture. This will help you get an overall idea of the architecture and how all of the subsystems are related.

Make sure the architecture shows how all of the vehicles, control, power, and stations work together.

4. Manage the Requirements on Different Contracts

Once you’ve decided on the architecture, you need to come up with the requirements from the contracts.

This will be your guide to make sure you’re meeting what the customer wants.

5. Manage the Interfaces

Then you’ll also have to make sure you manage the interfaces of the system.

This will help to make sure that it’s effective and that all of the teams can work together and collaborate.

6. Test the System

You may also want to test it to see if it’s capable of doing what you need.

When you are ready to test it, make sure you deploy the system to ensure it works perfectly before you give it to the customer.

7. Track the Progress

Lastly, you may also want to track the progress of the system.

If there are any issues, document them and ensure they’re fixed.
