Germany To Get Female Chancellor

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in General Politics, The World

Exit polls are inconclusive right now (surprise, surprise), but it looks like Angela Merkel is going to be the new leader of Germany.

Personally, I think this is a positive step. Schroder’s party was becoming ineffectual and having a woman in that position will help the world gain more respect for the viability of female leaders. Of course, Merkel has to do a good job in order to prove that out, but “good” is such a subjective jury it almost means she’ll be seen as a “good” leader regardless of how her administration is seen.

From the AP:

BERLIN - Conservative challenger Angela Merkel won the most votes in German elections Sunday, according to official results, but fell short of a clear mandate to govern as Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder staged a dramatic comeback and proclaimed that he should head the next government.

The inconclusive results made it likely that Germany’s next government could be weakened because of the narrow vote margin and difficulties in forming a coalition.

The vote centered on different visions of Germany’s role in the world and how to fix its sputtering economy. Schroeder touted the country’s role as a European leader and counterbalance to America, while Merkel pledged to reform the economy and strengthen relations with Washington.

A party that doesn’t have a clear mandate?

Sounds familiar…

I wouldn’t be so sure about Merkel taking over the Chancellorship. Her coalition options are quite limited and from the sound of things, she’s going to be begging Schroder and the SPD to enter into a grand coalition. Schroder has already said he won’t do a grand coalition unless he can continue to be Chancellor. I see no good options here. I’m guessing we’ll see some government limp along for a while before there is another, hopefully more conclusive, election.
