Get Tough Dems
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in General PoliticsSo says the Bayh…
DES MOINES, Iowa – Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh defended Democratic assaults on President Bush’s prosecution of the war on terror, but he warned Friday that his party can’t come across as “a bunch of wimps” on security issues.Asked about repeated Republican comments that Democrats are undermining the war on terror with their criticism, Bayh said Americans wouldn’t buy it.
“These statements are wrong and the American people know that we’re speaking out because we want to take a tougher, better approach to protecting this country,” Bayh said in an interview.
Bayh is in Iowa? I wonder what’s he’s doing there? Probably just hanging out with family and having some delicious presidential hopeful stew.
Anyway, back to the WoT…of course the Dems need to get tougher, but how?
Bayh provides answers:
“I’m concerned that we not come across as whiners and that kind of thing, like a bunch of wimps who say mean old Karl Rove is on us again,” said Bayh. “We’ve got to say look, we’re speaking out because we’re concerned the administration is undermining our security, their competence and their priorities have been wrong.”
Priorities…hmm…what do you think the priorities are in the WoT?

By finding a way to extricate the U.S. from its imperial entanglements in the Middle East and by transferring resources from the war of chose so that we can defend against the attacks in a war we did not choose: by improving port security, first responder capabilities, and multilateral police investigative capacities to uncover terrorist cells here and abroad.
In other words by getting serious about the real threat posed by terrorists and by making the case that our security interests are undermined by un-American grandiose buccaneering schemes that have been the hallmark of the hardline right since at least since the days of Iran/Contra.

Democrats must take a strong stand on national security issues. The Republicans have failed to secure our borders. Unfortunately, the Republican propaganda machine has been fairly effective in portraying Democrats as caring only about peace at any price and civil liberties. That is a parody of Democratic positions but is reinforced on a daily basis by many in the netroots left.
It is important that Democrats learn to be more nationalistic. Raising concerns about foreign control of ports and lack of port security was a step in the right direction, but simply not enough. The perfect issue to destroy the Republicans would have been the failure to control illegal immigration but political correctness won out in Democratic circles.
