Yikes.

I wake up to this heads-up from The Walrus Said:

Bigger than 9/11

This is the kind of attack Al-Qaeda is threatening against the US, warning all American Muslims to flee New York and Washington.

From an interview with Abu Dawood, the newly appointed commander of the al Qaeda forces in Afghanistan, by journalist Hamid Mir.

It is headlined:

Exclusive to Canada Free Press and Northeast Intelligence

Next Attack Imminent:
Muslims ordered to leave the United States

Final preparations have been made for the American Hiroshima [ ... ]

The al Qaeda operatives who will launch this attack are awaiting final orders. They remain in place in cities throughout the country. Many are masquerading as Christians and have adopted Christian names.

Journalist Mir has access — he was “the only journalist to interview Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and Taliban leader Mullah Omar in the wake of 9/11″ — and a good prophetic track record, having warned of “the resurgence of the Taliban with support from Iran and an unofficial truce between President Pervez Musharraf and al Qaeda.”

The interview is then quoted verbatim. A couple of provocative bits:

Our brothers are ready to attack inside America. We will breach their security again. There is no timeframe for our attack inside America; we can do it any time.

* * *

Bush is aware that brother Adnan [El Shukrijumah] has smuggled deadly materials inside America from the Mexican border. Bush is silent about him, because he doesn’t want to panic his people. [ ... ]

* * *

9/11 was a revenge of Palestinian children, killed by the US-made weapons, supplied to Israel. The next attack on America would be a revenge of Lebanese children killed by US-made cluster bombs.

* * *

Most of our brothers are living in Western countries, with Jewish and Christian names, with passports of Western countries. This time, someone with the name of Muhammad Atta will not attack inside America, it would be some David, Richard or Peter.

Go there. (And tip your hat to the Walrus on the way.)

Time will tell if these guys are blowing smoke, but they know they’ll squander a lot of credibility if they are. Very believable is their threat of a sort of Afghani Tet Offensive during Ramadan. I don’t like to admit to being terrorized by terrorists, but . . .

Yikes.

I’m afraid I’m pretty skeptical on this. Paul L. Williams is an author who wrote two years ago that Al Qaida had 20 Soviet suitcase bombs already inside the US. I think the guy may be a nut.

And I have a very hard time believing an Al Qaeda leader would give us chapter and verse this way.

You can tell a lot about a news source by looking at their front page.
    http://www.canadafreepress.com/

The Canada free press front page screams right wing tabloid nut job.

  3. Bob Says:

Northeast Intelligence Network, check the ‘about’ section. They asked for the warning.

Maybe they’re just a bunch of retired Plame’s who want to play political games?

I’m reproducing a comment I wrote at AmbivaBlog in response to other skeptical comments. I just looked around a little bit at readily available info about all the principals in this story.

OK, the authors of the article in the Canada Free Press are Paul L. Williams and David Dastych. Their bios:

Long time investigative journalist, Paul L. Williams is the author of such best-selling books as The Dunces of Doomsday, The Al Qaeda Connection , Osama’s Revenge: The Next 9/11. He has been the subject of a PBS documentary and the subject of programs on the Discovery and History channels. He is a frequent guest on such national news networks as Fox News, MSNBC, and NPR.
(International journalist David M. Dastych writes for Poland’s acclaimed weekly, Wprost. His columns appear regularly in the Edmonton-based Polish Panorama.) He can be reached at: [email protected]

The Dunces of Doomsday! Now there’s a title for you.

Northeast Intelligence Network is sponsoring a symposium in Las Vegas in November at which journalist Hamid Mir will be the featured speaker. This symposium reminds me very much of this one that I learned about at Kobayashi Maru, also quite alarmist.

Another report on the Northeast Intelligence Network site suggests that Al Qaeda has discussed tainting food as a method of attack on accessible websites — and that the current spinach scare could be their doing! This begins to sound really paranoid.

NEIN was founded by “veteran private investigator Douglas J. Hagmann,” who runs a podcast on Enigma Radio Network called “Homeland Security Weekly.”

Here’s Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir’s bio on Wikipedia. Included:

Mir recently claimed–in an interview with independent online news source CanadianFreePress.com–that Al-Qaeda has acquired three so called “suitcase nukes” from Russia and have successfully smuggled them to Europe. Mr. Mir claims that they have possessed these weapons since long before the 9/11 attacks in New York and Washington and that they were originally intended to be targeted against London, Paris and Los Angeles.
Mr. Mir also claims that Al-Qaeda has 23 sleeper agents inside the United States (minus the 19 who died carrying out the 9/11 attacks) and that these terrorists already have enough radioactive material for six “dirty bombs.”

The U.S. State Department website posts an interview Mir did with Secretary Condoleezza Rice in March 2005, so he isn’t a complete flake. Mir has spoken out in Pakistan in favor of women’s rights and decrying his country’s lack of democracy.

On the other hand, he perpetuates a number of conspiracy theories, e.g that Iran is now secretly helping Al Qaeda and that Russia is sending weapons to the Taliban as revenge for the U.S. supporting the mujaheddin in the ’80s.

Just a guess: there’s a market for this kind of rumor in certain corners of the Right, and there are people who are happy to supply it. It suits al Qaeda to have an outlet for this saber-rattling, and perhaps it also suits some in the U.S. government — who knows? To be continued.

  7. Walrus Says:

I had quite honestly never heard of Canada Free Press before seeing the article this morning. If the whole thing turns out to be a hoax, I would be the first to be happy about it. Bringing it up has had the desired result; the blogosphere is poking at it and finding out how much substance there is to the story. This can only be good.

  8. amba Says:

In April Free Republic debated the credibility of Paul Williams and associates and found it highly dubious. The words “nutjob” and “loon” are used.

  9. amba Says:

What they say is certainly not incredible or impossible, except for one thing: If Osama had nukes, he’d have used them.

  10. ES Says:

I thought the administration, as well as the right-side blogosphere polemists, had told us the center stage in GWOT/GSAVE was Iraq and no where else. Why is there fear mongering of what AQ can do? We have been told a number of times these yahoos are on the junior varsity team – not the first team varsity.

The Jawa Report has been keeping an updated running story on this issue – they crossed the American-Mexican border, one of the blog’s readers had visually identified one of the two terrorist in some town north of Texas, and so forth and such. Are stories like this any different than all of the warnings leading up to 2004 elections?

  11. ES Says:

I forgot to mention Benard Lewis, neo-conservative historian, had a theory Iran was going to launch nuclear weapons at Israel on 22 August 2006. Did this event happen? At some point one of these blind pigs are going to find an acorn – but does it mean the citizens in the US have to be in continual fear UNTIL something actually happens?

  12. amba Says:

Continual fear would be a) pointless, and b) physiologically and psychologically impossible. The almost certain fact is that one day something terrible is going to happen, nobody knows what or when — but then, that’s always true/ nothing new. Hurricane Katrina was terrible and was not sent by Al Qaeda. Every once in a while you give it a thought and an imagine, you shudder, then you shrug, and you get on with it, unless you are in the fear business.

These stories appear to be a collusion, or mutual exploitation, between people on both sides who are in the fear business.

[...] I know its a long shot, but figure I might help the cause in any way I can.  This guy’s name is Adnan el Shukrijumah.  He is wanted in connection to terrorist threats within the United States.  I found out about him from this article at Donklephant.  Who knows, maybe the internet blogoshpere could start a viral-terrorist capture trend. From the FBI website: [...]

  14. Alan Says:

More on Al Qaeda’s nuclear weapons programme

    http://www.crusade-media.com/news1.html

Consider the religious fatwa titled “A Treatise on the Legal Status of Using Weapons of Mass Destruction Against Infidelsâ€Â? that Osama bin Laden secured from Shaykh Nasir bin Hamd al-Fahd, a young and prominent Saudi cleric justifying the use of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) against Americans, in May 2003 – Why would Bin Ladan look for such a fatwa?

  15. Eric Says:

Osama Bin Laden and AQ want a long dragged out war with the United States, they don’t want to end our country tomorrow. Second of all, if AQ had nuclear suitcase bombs, they would not use them all. OBL has already said that he isn’t fond of grand plans because it leaves too many loose ends. They would use may be 1 or 2 but annihlating 7 to 10 US cities on one day won’t happen any time soon. Last if AQ had nuclear suitcase bombs they would have used at least one by now. Paul Williams is a person that wants to sell books and as we all know fear sells just like sex sells but it doesn’t make it right.

  16. yuka Says:

If there is someone who are very fond of America aside from Non-American people who love to work and migrate there, it must be Al Qaeda. I believe the United States has always been the target of Al Qaeda. I think the organization is built to destroy the United States.
