Gloria Steinem’s Shameful McCain POW Comment
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Dumb Things Said By Smart People, Hillary, McCain, Partisan Hacks, Texas
She was stumping for Hillary in Texas and I can’t imagine she will be again any time soon. Of course, Hillary’s campaign may be over soon so this may be a complete non issue. At the very least, Hillary should denounce AND reject the following.
“Suppose John McCain had been Joan McCain and Joan McCain had got captured, shot down and been a POW for eight years. [The media would ask], ‘What did you do wrong to get captured? What terrible things did you do while you were there as a captive for eight years?’” Steinem said, to laughter from the audience.McCain was, in fact, a prisoner of war for around five-and-a-half years, during which time he was tortured repeatedly. Referring to his time in captivity, Steinem said with bewilderment, “I mean, hello? This is supposed to be a qualification to be president? I don’t think so.”
Congrats Gloria…you’re back in the news!
But seriously, there really aren’t very many additional words needed when somebody says something this dumb. All I need to do is highlight it and move on.
Let’s hope Hillary responds soon.
UPDATE:
Woops. Looks like the post had been updated…
The Clinton campaign sends over the following statement from Howard Wolfson: “Senator Clinton has repeatedly praised Senator McCain’s courage and service to our country. These comments certainly do not represent her thinking in any way. Senator Clinton intends to have a respectful debate with Senator McCain on the issues.”
Ehh…I think she can do a lot better than that, but I doubt we’ll hear much more about this.

The Feminist vs. the War Hero…
Sorry, Gloria, but knowing how to defend your nation is a qualification for ruling people. One of the jobs of the President is to be Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces (of the most powerful military in the world). And in my book, that means that …..

Gloria, you man-hater, for pity’s sake, get a life. It’s not enough for you that you ruined femininity for us females, now you have to go on the attack on a man who heroically stood up to a whole lot more physical torture than you’ll ever take in your cushy, rich little white-girl feminist life.
He was put through hell on earth, guess that hardly compares to the demeaning experience of being an ex-Playboy waitress wearing a bunny suit!

[...] Donklefant puts this in a category of "dumb things said by smart people". I'm not sure I would give her that much credit. The reaction from other pundits has been far less generous. [...]

Gloria is a wack job. Do people listen to this nut? Did Hillary even want her input. Some of these people need to ask if the candidates want them around????
They do more harm then good!

No doubt the candidates know the speakers invited at their rallies.
And yes, that are people that listen attentively to nutcases like Steinman. Everybody has a following, be them crazy or sane.
