“Real Virginians”
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Dumb Things Said By Smart People, McCain, Video, VirginiaI wonder how a third of the voting population would react to the McCain’s Nancy Pfotenhauer characterizing them as basically “fake” Virginians.
And even given the chance to take it back, she didn’t? No wonder Virginia’s turning blue this year.
I can’t wait for Doug to weigh in on this.

Justin,
Here’s what I said about this about a half-hour ago:

Well, the new Republican meme is that only Republicans are real Americans, after all. So it would be “logical” in their world view that Virginians who aren’t voting McCain can’t be real Virginians as well.

GOP code for “real Virginians” = “white rural folks”; code for “Americans” = “white rural folks”. As a white guy who grew up in a small timber community and now lives (and loves) the city he lives in, I find these insinuations to be totally racist. Guess what everyone – if you live in the U.S. legally you are an American. I can’t believe I won’t be voting for McCain because I used to love the guy – but what the hell happened? Look at the incompetent racist jackasses he’s surrounded himself with in this campaign.

Well living in NOVA I guess I don’t qualify as a “real” Virginian. However, I get a “real” vote and generally I don’t give it to people who go out of their way to insult me and the country I live in.
