Clinton is a power player, but not a diplomat! She would make a great Attorney General, but a disaster as Secretary of State. She can tell others how it is, but diplomats need to be seen as people who listen too.

Richardson is a diplomat. He is likeable and listens as well as being tough when it is important.

I am not at all sure that Hillary is a good choice from Obama’s perspective. As I posted on my blog, The Purple Center (http://thepurplecenter.blogspot.com/):

“…[D]on’t get me wrong, Hillary is great. I voted for her in the New York primary. But try to remember the last time that State was held by a prominent politician, much less one who entertained Presidential ambitions and even ran against the President. It doesn’t happen because a President can live without worrying whether his senior foreign policy maker is really, really on the same team and is not working at polishing up her own image, the better to run for President again. Cabinet secretaries should be great people but also people the President can replace without a political backlash from the cabinet member’s political supporters.

“Let’s face it; Hillary would not be able to help herself. If Obama wants to be able to sleep nights, he’d be well advised to look elsewhere.”

What looks like a great move now could wind up resulting in paralyzing conflict within the administration, and it’s the country that will bear the consequences.

Picking Richardson would secure the Hispanic vote for Obama and the Democratic party.

Hillary would just be a celebrity that would be more concerned about her own legacy that getting the job done.

We need a secretary of state who is willing to talk to other nations even if they’re not our friends. Hillary said during the campaign that she thought that was a bad idea.

Obama should chose Richardson.

Just curious: Why do you think Clinton would be better as our “face to the world”? I just don’t see enough of the deliberate diplomat in her to make a good Secretary of State. She’s too much the politician, the game-player, the letter of the law rather than the spirit type.
