Schwarzenegger Could Endorse A Dem?
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in California, DemocratsIt could be a political ploy, but one never knows with Arnold…
If Republican candidates for governor of California are hoping for an automatic high five from the sitting governor, they ought not to get too comfortable. When asked Friday after giving a speech on health care in which he highly praised President Obama and other Democrats whether he would ever consider endorsing a Democrat to replace him, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said, “It could happen, yes.â€
The governor offered no specifics on any particular candidate he might support.
Intriguing, yes? Because if a Dem can offer a much more centrist agenda, I genuinely believe that Arnold could endorse her or him, especially given the current political climate that Republicans are offering…which isn’t very positive.
More as it develops…

In the California legislature, Democrats have not needed to focus on competent governing because the Republicans have focused on ideological extreme purity. Emphasis on the extreme. (The only way Arnold got in was an open special election, where he didn’t have to win a Republican primary first.) As a result, the Democrats, too, have a bunch of nut cases in government — only slightly leavened with machine politicians looking for favors for special interest groups.
So a centerist, if a few manage to get thru the primary process, would obviously appeal to Arnold. No way he would work against one, just because they were from a different party. Heck, if one got nominated, he would probably support them regardless of species! And that applies to state-wide offices, not just the legislature. And why not? Arnold is that extreme rarity in California: an office holder who actually is interested in trying to make government do a decent job of governing. In the unlikely (make that extremely unlikely) event that a Democratic candidate to replace him is of the same mind, obviously he would support them.

Let’s see — the Democratic front-runners are Jerry Brown, Gavin Newsom and Antonio Villaraigosa. Centrists? YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. The most idiotic blog post I’ve ever seen.
Do you even live in California, Justin?
