House Repeals Health Care Law 245-189

Republicans said they were going to do it…and so they did. And 3 Democrats joined them.
The House voted on Wednesday to repeal the sweeping healthcare law enacted last year, as Republicans made good on a central campaign pledge and laid down the first major policy marker of their new majority.The party-line vote was 245-189, as three Democrats joined all 242 Republicans in supporting repeal.
Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said the healthcare law on the books would increase spending, raise taxes and eliminate jobs.
This is the same House that barely passed this legislation last year roughly around the same time (March 2010). That vote was 219-212. In November 2010 it was 220-215.
What a difference an election makes.
Still, this is just a symbolic vote. The Senate won’t pass this so it’ll die.

It’s a good start. Is it “symbolic”? Well, some dispute that, and besides, to a point, symbolism matters, right? Right? Remember, the point isn’t to do the impossible by repealing in 2011, but to cue up full repeal in 2013. In the meantime, the House should do what it can to do some surgical strikes on defunding whichever components of the plan are susceptible to it.

I’m all for the “repeal and replace” approach…we have a stake in the ground with the current act, and moving it towards a better system is fine by me. But just “repeal” seems insane to me, after the amount of pain it took to get this stake in the ground. Let’s see a republican bill that addresses the problem, then we can compare the two. Between the current bill and the status quo ante, the current bill wins hands down.

They’ll never replace it with anything that really does some good. Consider that one of their main proposals is to allow sales across state lines…so that people are “free” to buy policies of questionable value that will make companies money but likely see people get unpleasant surprises when they find out what is and isn’t really covered for the money they paid the out of state insurance company. It will produce a race to the bottom where insurance companies will place themselves in whatever state lets them get away with the biggest rip off of their customers. The state’s motivation will be jobs. Of course it will be interesting to see if after that complaints from their own citizens start to flood in if they get taken in by misleading promises.
