Android Oreo Comes With Turn On Wi-Fi Automatically Option

Android 8.0 Oreo is the latest Google OS and it has brought numerous improvements to Android devices. However, there are only a few devices that have the final Android 8.0 Oreo release, such as Pixel and Nexus. This means we already had a chance to take a good look at it and see what is has to offer. Today we will focus on the “Turn on Wi-Fi Automatically” feature that came with Oreo.

How does this feature work

The “Turn on Wi-Fi Automatically” does exactly what its name says.

Low-quality Wi-Fi networks can be really annoying and constantly connect and disconnecting from them can drain your battery. This feature allows your device to scan the are for Wi-Fi networks even when you turn off your phone’s Wi-Fi. Your device is now able to connect automatically to any “high-quality saved network”. This means you will connect automatically to your home Wi-Fi, or other saved networks. This feature will also announce you when there is a stable Wi-Fi network nearby so you can activate your Wi-Fi.

Google removed this feature for Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P

While the official Android Oreo builds for Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL have this feature, the Nexus ones do not. This doesn’t really make sense since Nexus 5X/6P had it with the Android O Developer Preview 2.

Here is how you can still get this feature on Nexus 5X and 6P

First of all, make sure that you have ADB installed on your computer and connect your Nexus device to it.

Enable USB debugging and then open up a command prompt and execute this command: adb shell

Now execute this command: settings put global wifi_wakeup_available 1

Finally, execute this command: settings put global wifi_wakeup_enabled 1
