Can You Spot A Fake Smile?
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Kitchen Sink, ScienceThat’s what a new online test from BBC is asking.
Why not put it to the test? I got a 16 out of 20. Can you beat me?
Spot the fake smiles and report back here with the results. And besides, it’ll help you hone your ability to determine if politicians and pundits are faking it or not.

Wow, I sucked. 11/20 correct. I may as well have been randomly guessing. And it was no surprise that I got all four of the younger women wrong!

I got 14/20. I think I was overcompensating. I generally expect Brits to be sneering rather than smiling, so I probably gave the benefit of the doubt too much. Then I looked, and sure enough, this was a BBC deal.

Hah! I got 17 out of 20. Boy, there’s something to that “bad teeth” stereotype.

19/20. Their eyes give it away.

Indeed. The eyes give it away. Usually, the shape of their eyes change if they’re smiling for real. If not, they stay the same.
Good catch Lola!
