Michael Brown Out; Praised By Chertoff
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Hurricane KatrinaSo he’s out, but apparently it was his decision…
First this from CNN:
BATON ROUGE, La. - Amid harsh criticism of federal relief efforts, Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff announced Friday that Michael Brown, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is handing over Hurricane Katrina relief duties to a Coast Guard official and returning to Washington to oversee the national office.“Other challenges and threats remain around the world, and Brown is needed to prepare for those, Chertoff said at a news conference in Baton Rouge.
“Michael Brown has done everything he possibly could to coordinate the federal response to this unprecedented challenge, Chertoff added. He sidestepped a question on whether the move was the first step toward Brown’s leaving FEMA.
Note the language there. Chertoff said that this was Brown’s decision. Brown is handing the duties over to somebody else.
Sorry, but I find it highly unlikely that he had any choice in the matter.
Chertoff also threw this pearl out there.
“Mike Brown has done everything he could have possibly done,” Chertoff said during a news conference. “I appreciate his work.”
You know what…when you’re in Chertoff’s position, you should never crucify a guy like Brown publicly. It doesn’t help the situation any. However, you certainly don’t have to praise him!
Chertoff really believes that Brown has done everything he could have possibly done?
Who are these people?

I agree, Brown did everything he could have possibly done. Not everything a competent administrator could have done, but everything he could have possibly done. It’s like the backhanded compliment one actrss gives another after a show: “You’ve never been better.”

Hmm, interesting theory. Although coming from Chertoff, I doubt it was meant in any other way than affirmation of Brown’s competency.
