Valerie Plame Was Classified During Time Of Leak

That’s what the Libby indictment reads:

Joseph Wilson was married to Valerie Plame WIlson (”Valerie Wilson”). At all relevant times from January 1, 2002 through July 2003, Valerie Wilson was employed by the CIA, and her employment status was classified. Prior to July 14, 2003, Valerie Wilson’s affiliation with the CIA was not common knowledge outside the intelligence community.

This could spell BIG problems for Libby and whoever else is eventually indicted.

And apparently, Wolf Blitzer has read another indictment on air that says something similar.

Prior to the July 14, 2003, Valerie Wilson’s employment status was classified. Prior to that date, her affiliation with the CIA was not common knowledge outside the intelligence community. Disclosure of classified information about an individual’s employment by the CIA has the potential to damage the national security in ways that range from preventing that individual’s future use in a covert capacity to compromising intelligence-gathering methods and operations, endangering the safety of CIA employees and those who deal with them.

Oh boy.

I know the conservative blogosphere, which has contended for a while now that Plame was already “out” by this time, is going to be all over this one.

My question is: who’s right?

    “Who’s right?”

Are you serious? This is a completely reputable U.S. Attorney versus a frantic, damage-control-focused conservative blogosophere. It should be obvious who is right here. This portion of the debate is now closed: Plame was under cover at the time of the leak.

  2. ford4x4 Says:

Very interesting… so what was the source that conservatives were using to say she wasn’t classified at the time? I’m sure I even heard that on the nightly news once in a while.

So where are the indictments on that?

  4. sleipner Says:

The difficulty is in how that particular law is written - the way I understand it, not only do they have to prove that they KNEW she was undercover, but that they willfully disclosed her status to cause harm, or something like that.

Basically the law has loopholes any decent lawyer could drive a garbage truck full of Republicans through.

  5. Sam Says:

This is pure Democratic Party bull. There was no underlying crime here. Just a lapse of memory. No one should be jailed for forgetting something.
Typical liberal tactic. Bring up phony charges and hope you can catch someone in a lapse of memory and then call it a lie. No one should ever go to jail for forgetting something if there is no underlying crime proven.

  6. Sam Says:

Valerie Plame WAS NOT a covert agent. It is only a crime to reveal a COVERT AGENT. The fact that Valerie Plame was CLASSIFIED does not mean a thing. No criminal charges could be sustained so they went for pergury. This was pure dirty democratic politics. Much like the Lacrosse players at Duke University.

  7. Justin Gardner Says:

Sam, the special prosecutor has said multiple times that Plame was covert. That was her status, whether you like it or not.

And Libby was convicted by a jury of his peers, so apparently Fitzgerald had enough evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he did more than forget.
