It should also be noted that Fox News itself had to be prodded to walk its talk on this matter. I can’t find the link, but last week some blogger pointed out that the Fox Christmas tree ornaments being sold on their site said “Happy Holidays�, not “Merry Christmas�. Now, I don’t mind “Happy Holidays� myself [I’ve always regarded that expression as covering New Year’s along with Christmas, not necessarily Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day or even my birthday (the 28th)], but for Fox to engage in the same conduct it is so publicly railing against is hypocrisy.

Well, this was pretty much all hyped by O’Reilly, so I don’t know how much control they have over them.

But to the point that we’re talking about Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas, can’t we just have both? I just find it a bit weird that this is even an issue, since there are OTHER holidays during this season. True, Christmas is the biggest one, but why does everybody have such a problem with being inclusive?

I think what really wrankled people was the Clintons calling the Christmas Tree and Holiday Tree. I believe they did that. And that pissed off the anti-PC police, who thought things had gone too far once again. And hey, fair enough, but shouldn’t we strive for more inclusivity instead of less?

The KKK burning a cross on the lawn of the courthouse isn’t a religous expression, and they are probably breaking a few laws regarding open fires in the process. Regardless of whether or not the KKK could be considered a “religion”, and as much as I dislike what they stand for, I think they are still allowed their freedom of speech.

Why? Because I can turn Stern off, in fact I don’t ever have to turn him on. But I don’t want my government run by a particular religion. Those fundies scare me. All they seem to want is to tell me how to live.

But your example of a private group putting up a nativity scene, doen’t bother me. As long as a private group can put up a star of david, or something commemorting Ramadan, etc. etc.

Now that I think about it, the problem is how do you keep the KKK out of the front lawn. Are they allowed to burn crosses?

The issue seems to be whether religous displays on government property are allowed by the constitution or not. I think spending tax dollars on these displays is wrong, but for reasons other than Church/State. However, if a private organization wants to host a live nativity scene on the courthouse lawn, what’s the problem? I’m not offended by that at all. If you are more offended by the Ten Commandments in a courtroom than you are by Howard Stern, you’ve got a few personal issues to deal with.

To be honest I don’t see a lot of religion in christmas.

I think you’re right. It’s not just public institutions or the ACLU that are “taking Christ out of Christmas,” it’s also a host of high-profile (and not-so-high-profile) businesses, such as department stores who have co-opted Christmas as a commercial holiday.

Obviously they hadn’t actually looked at the frickin’ stamp, which said “CHRISTMAS” in caps at the top, and featured a portrait of Mary and Jesus.

If this year’s campaign features a similar attention to detail, it should be amusing.
