It is interesting to see how nature conservation and the protection / creation of national parks over time has shifted from the upper class and conservatives to the left worldwide. I am very concerned about this. As a child I was always surprised that the church was never interested in the issues of conservation, while the Paradise message is very loud and clear: Man(kind) is responsable for nature.
Much older and a little bit wiser now, I still regret that we see so much difference in interest between the parties, but they are equal in the issue that none of them addresses the greatest problem in conservation worldwide:
The most limiting factor in conservation worldwide is the shortage of rangers: estimated at over 100,000 in developing countries. Currently no government, party or conservation organization in the world addresses this problem. That is why the Adopt A Ranger Foundation has been created: http://www.adopt-a-ranger
Addressing the park ranger deficit would be the only hope of preserving maybe 50% of the species on earth in the course of this century. Both parties should address this problem, because a world with wild areas and animals is the responsibility of all custodians of paradise, Democrates and Republicans alike

I think there are a number of different sets of ideas that can be considered forms of American conservatism. However before blaming the media note that certain factions of the right often with somewhat radical visions (eg. deficits don't matter, we fight 9/11 by spending, we can successfully embark on utopian schemes in the third world) have seized the word for their own uses and this is reflected in common usage.

Russell Kirk told me a ghost story at his haunted castle in Michigan when I was about 7. It was a trip. I have family that live in Michigan and my father, JefePeros, knew Kirk through conservative academia connections. I was obviously too young to engage him in deep conversation -- even though JefePeros made me read 10-pages of the John Birch Society's Blue Book every night!! Just kidding. Yeah, my younger sister and I slept in a huge guest room on the third floor and there was a black cat and...scary stuff.
