Door-To-Door Breast Exam?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Health Care, Law

Upon reading the following story late last night, I had just one question. However, I feared people would think I was being insensitive to the victims.

Well, I’ve gotten over it, so here’s the question: “Who in their right mind would let a random stranger into their house to do a free breast exam?”

From the Miami Herald:

On Wednesday, Broward sheriff’s deputies arrested Winikoff on charges of sexual battery and simple assault. Winikoff allegedly fondled the breasts of two women and then sexually assaulted them.

[...]

The first victim, a 35-year-old woman, realized Winikoff was not a doctor, and her boyfriend called BSO. While he called authorities, Winikoff was allegedly assaulting a 33-year-old woman a block away.

Winikoff, of Coconut Creek, was arrested nearby. One of his alleged victims said he parked his car in front of her apartment complex. The white-haired Winikoff wore a striped polo shirt and dark pants, one of his alleged victims said.

Okay, a couple more questions…

First, this guy alarmed the first woman, and then went onto another apartment? Second, the first victim’s boyfriend called the cops? Was he there?

Life is indeed stranger than fiction.

UPDATE:
A couple years ago I saw a very funny Canadian PSA about self-breast exams. The premise was that this teenage guy named Cam was offering women his services so they wouldn’t have to go to the trouble. It got banned.

Little did I realize that somebody would actually try it.

You’re not being insensitive to the victims. This reminds me of those t-shirts that say things like, “amateur gynecologist.” However, that doesn’t mean he still shouldn’t be punished. The most ridiculous of fraudulent schemes are believed by naive, uneducated, or gullible people, but it doesn’t mean they aren’t illegal.

  2. Justin Gardner Says:

Oh, I think the guy should definitely be prosecuted. My point wasn’t to suggest that he shouldn’t be, but to the victims I still say, “Are you kidding me?”

I know it’s not the same, but I think it’s certainly similar to somebody coming to your door and offering free punches to the face and then after it happens the person complains, “Hey! That guy punched me in the face!”

The boyfriend was there. He was apparently watching and trying to be taught how to do a breast exam.

Also, the couple moved here from Haiti not too long ago, so they thought that this might common in the U.S. That kind of explains it, but still… they have to be pretty stupid also.

I’m available for free Bank Safety Deposit Box exams if anyone’s looking.

The very notion of a modern doctor making a house call should have clued in any sane American.

Justin, I didn’t write about this article when I saw it, though tempted, for fear I really would be too hard on the victims. (Yes, the guy should be prosecuted, of course.)

Truly, this one is just beyond me.

I’m not 100 percent sure what my entire reaction would be if some random dude rung my doorbell and wanted to examine my breasts. But I’m absolutely positive it wouldn’t involve asking him in and letting him do it.

I found this story depressing as well as odd.

  7. Callimachus Says:

How about, “sure you can check my breasts, if I can hold your balls while you’re doing it.”

  8. reader_iam Says:

Now that I think about it, unless the guy had a weapon or unless my kindergartner were right there, I might employ a variation on the lesson I learned from my father and also from the situation that inspired him.

OK, I just broke a rule of mine in linking like that, but maybe I can beg forgiveness, rather than permission, in this instance.

You can link to whatever you want reader_iam. Well, not pr0n, but your own posts…of course.

  10. GN Says:

If a woman answers her door to a stranger, listens to him as he offers a free breast exam, believes he is legitimate, she desreves to be …. squeezed. He, on the other hand, deserves to be prosecuted.

And, I want her address because I have this old Pennsylvania Railroad stock that I am trying to sell ….

Would you really trust a guy that looks like that? I feel sexually assaulted just looking at the picture.
