The Secrets Are Safe.

Says AMac from Winds of Change, on this thread at Mighty Middlereversing his own earlier opinion, that the SWIFT revelations in the New York Times et. al. had damaged national security, after reading what a respected finance expert at the Counterterrorism Blog had to say.

As Michael points out, the news here isn’t only that the real secrets are almost certainly safe, which would be good news. The news is also that a blogger on the front lines of a contentious issue placed the preponderance of the evidence above the defense of his position. Not only that — he was glad to be wrong, because if security is not compromised, it’s good news.

This undercuts many (though not all) of the points I made earlier on the thread at #15. I’m happy to say.

How many right bloggers have seized on this story mainly as a golden opportunity to convict the New York Times of treason? Conversely, how many New York Times reporters were glad to be wrong when the deficit wasn’t as deep as expected? Michael says:

The truth should matter. It shouldn’t all be gamesmanship. It shouldn’t just be about advancing your agenda. It really should be a search for truth.

And not only truth — the good of the country! Can you give credit where credit is due if Bush does something right? If The New York Times is within its rights? It’s exactly like the Old Testament story of King Solomon and the baby. Who loves the baby enough to want it to live, even if it means the other mother gets it?
