The White House Endorses Ned Lamont?

Yes, you read that right. Today we see a particularly politically savvy move by the Administration, which I believe is aimed at getting Lamont more support.
Bascially, Bush won’t endorse the GOP candidate in Connecticut, Alan Schlesinger, over Joe Lieberman. And maybe it’s just me, but this seems less like an endorsement of Lieberman and more of a hope by the Administration that they can pull Democratic support away from Lieberman and towards Lamont. Seems unlikely? Maybe not.
Combine the Vice President giving conference calls about the Connecticut race with this latest non-endorsement endorsement by Bush, and what you have is a situation where the White House desperately needs to paint Dems as soft on defense. What’s the best way to do that? Right now it seems to have Lamont pull ahead and seem like a shoo-in for the seat. And let’s be perfectly honest, if the President had an approval rating above 50%, there’s no way he’d be doing something like not endorsing a GOP candidate. No way, no how.
Also, there’s a new GOP backed group that has come out in support of Lieberman called “Vets for Freedom.” Anybody wonder who came up with this one? Yeah, me neither because I know already.
But apart from the expected GOP support he’s currently enjoying, it appears as if most of the Senate Dems are abandoning Lieberman en masse. Obviously, this is to be expected. In fact, only 3 Dems so far have said they are supporting Lieberman and you can find out who here. That leaves 20 who support Lamont and 18 who are undecided. How many of those will swing Joe’s way? Maybe 5 or 6 tops.
So what do you say? Is the White House playing savvy politics or do they genuinely want Lieberman to win?

[...] Again, I said so before in the post “The White House Endorses Ned Lamont”, I find the Republican’s backing of Lieberman to be completely disingenuous. You and I both know that if Lieberman had won the primary, Republicans would be showing no love for Lieberman. But given this opportunity, they see a chance to hand Ned Lamont a win and paint the Democrats weak on defense. [...]
