Hastert Leaks Resignation Scenario

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Elections

You know how these things go. If Hastert didn’t want the following “conservative activist” to talk about his possible resignation, the guy wouldn’t have said anything.

This is a way to shore up support for Hastert’s credibility, do a little damage control and remind conservatives that anything is better than having the Dems run the House.

From CQPolitics:

House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., told a leading conservative Wednesday that he would resign as the top congressional leader if it would help the Republican Party stave off defeat in November.

But conservative activist Paul Weyrich said Hastert has rejected calls for his resignation because he believes it would prompt “a feeding frenzy that ultimately would lead to the downfall of other GOP leaders as well.

“He said if he thought that resigning would be helpful to the Republicans maintaining the majority, he would do it. But he did not think it would be helpful for Republicans, Weyrich said in an interview after holding what he described as an emotional telephone conversation with Hastert, who is home in Illinois campaigning and trying to deal with the fallout from the Mark Foley scandal.

Will he or won’t he. The next few weeks will determine that.

Stay tuned.

Doesn’t this just reenforce the fact that this is all about staying in power and not about doing what’s right? He is dodging the real question about responsibility, and towing the ‘but Democrats are worse’ bull****.

Perhaps if Hastert resigned the story would be more likely to fade away because the issue would be “resolved” as it stands now with everyone doing a “Hastert Resignation Watch” the story is a lot less likely to fade.
