James, of course there is a correlation between war & divorce. Basically, husbands and wives serving in the military or politics during war are shifting their energy to the cause and are less able to effectively tend a marriage. War has an effect similar to that of the Industrial Revolution on traditional family roles--taking spouse/parent to work out of the home.

Legalization of gay marriage is only an indicator of a more liberal environment. The liberal environment is the result of happy, straight legislators who have been exposed to the ideologies of equality for a generation or more. The legalization of gay marriage is resisted by traditionalists because it initiates an implicit competition for government recognition which has rewards of tax exemptions, deductions, survivor benefits, political clout, etc.

One statistic (divorce rates have dropped in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark) may have nothing to do with another (same sex partnerships were legalized) even if they they correspond to the same period in time and location. In the United States, divorce rates reached a high when America won a war (World War II). They also went up in the 1960s-1970s when the United States was most heavily involved in the Cold War. Any correlation between war, communism, and divorce rates??? Just because divorce rates began dropping in the US in the 1980s once Ronald Reagan became President doesn't mean his election caused them to drop. In fact, Ronald Reagan as governor of California, signed a no-fault divorce bill into law in 1969. Him becoming President is not likely what caused the divorce rates to drop in the 1980s. These statistics of partnership laws in Scandinavia and divorce rates have not been proven to have been related to one another at all. Same-sex marriages, regardless of religion or morality, have not been statistically proven to HELP marriages of heterosexual couples. My reply is not an argument against "numbers like that"... it is a declaration of poor logic using "numbers like that."

As little as I have against same-sex marriage:

Sweden is not America. The cultures are very different. What works there, will not necessarily work here.

The argument against same-sex marriage starts with religious belief that homosexuality is wrong. Most people don’t realize that the argument also ends there. Secular reason and logic show that same-sex marriage will have only beneficial consequences. So the latest evidence should surprise no one. Clearly, legalizing same-sex marriage will bring about an increase in marriages; reduce the number of inadvisable marriages between gays and heterosexuals; result in more couples in stable relationships (who could, by the way, raise and support children or be foster parents); help to reduce sexual promiscuity among gays; encourage gays to take the ethics of marriage seriously; and establish married gays as role models for young gays coming to terms with their own sexuality. Young people seem to grasp these things more readily. I believe that when today’s apolitical youth become political, same-sex marriage will become legal. By the way, President Bush apparently thinks that the U.S. Constitution as currently written supports the right to same-sex marriage. That’s why he’s advocating amending the Constitution.

when will gays have the same marital rights as straights? 2012? 2016? 2020? Sooner?

You're delusional. When a 1/4 of the Evangelicals in this country turn out to vote, they outnumber all of the social progressive liberals. Furthermore, this isn't Europe sweetheart - its America and we take God far more seriously than the Scandanavians.

The post-above is funny, too - lamenting "Maverick No More" regarding McCain's support of Prop. 109. What, you thought John McCain wasn't serious about running for president or the Senate for that matter?

What's interesting is that in South Carolina, they've been saying that the Scandinavian countries show that a marriage amendment against same sex couples is a good thing.

From www.realmarriage.info, they claim "Before homosexual marriage was legalized in Scandinavia most couples married before the birth of their second child together. Since legalization, 80% of first-born children are born out of wedlock and 60% of all subsequent children thereafter are born to unwed parents."

They're also worried about the effect on the children. "Scandinavian children have a higher risk of bearing children outside of marriage and their grandchildren are more likely to live in a single-parent home. This is of grave concern since women and children in married households are less likely to be abused or live in poverty."

Their logic didn't quite follow, and I'm glad to see there's other information now that refutes their claim.
