John Edwards Will Continue To Run For President

Politico was half wrong. His wife’s cancer has returned, but he’s going to keep going.

From MSNBC:

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – John Edwards said Thursday his wife’s cancer has returned, but said he will continue his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.

“The campaign goes on. The campaign goes on strongly, Edwards told reporters, his wife by his side.

Earlier Thursday, MSNBC.com incorrectly reported that Edwards would suspend his campaign because of his wife’s illness. The report was based on a statement an Edwards friend made to Politico.com, a political Web site, and a source who spoke to NBC.

Honestly, I don’t know how I feel about this. Obviously this is a personal decision between John and Elizabeth, but they have two small children to think of. If Elizabeth gets really sick, I’m sure they have enough family to take care of them…but when should John say enough’s enough?

Andrew Sullivan wrote the following after reading the Politico piece too. I wonder if he wants to retract anything…

He does it because his wife has a recurrence of cancer in some degree to be further explored. It is of a piece with his character to do this; and a simple testament that he has the right priorities and values to be a president of the United States. Sorry, Ms Coulter. But this man will be remembered for a character you do not even want to possess.

Does he still have that character since he’s going to keep going?

Thoughts?

    Dear Mr. and Mrs. Edwards,

I am sorry about the recent return of cancer to you, Elizabeth and just last night in our Community Lenten Service we were challenged to be in prayer for our leaders. You are now in mine. I was curious to know the type of cancer and wasn’t able to find that in an article. The only reason I ask is this…My sister has Multiple Myloma and is currently living with this cancer. She had been on Thalidimide for about a year and it was very successful in keeping her numbers down. I’m sure you have many doctors and lots more information than you might even need, but I wanted to share this with you. Stay strong, rest a lot and remember that Through God all things are possible.

Judy, check out the ABC RSS feed for more details about her cancer. The story says that she may be able to live for quite awhile, although she most likely have the cancer present for the rest of her life.

None of us really know what Edward’s game plan is. I am sure he & Elizabeth have discussed it thoroughly. He always has the option of abandoning his campaign at a later date. and if he continues to draw respectable numbers & decides to quit later, His support could improve someone else’s chances for the nomination.

I, too, will be praying for the family.
