Gallup, Giuliani, GOP
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in PollsHe’s still leading by double his nearest opponent.
The April 2-5 Gallup Poll finds 38% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents favoring Giuliani for the 2008 nomination, well ahead of his closest pursuer, McCain (16%). Two unannounced but potential candidates — Gingrich and Thompson — tie for third at 10%. The remaining 10 candidates tested in the poll all score below 10%, led by Mitt Romney at 6%.
Yep, Giuliani’s message and status is still quite compelling to most GOPers, and it shows no signs of slowing down.
On the other hand, Romney has a bunch of money, but ultimately only 6% of the hearts and minds. Something tells me that next quarter’s numbers won’t be so rich.
And I bet his hunting stories won’t help his poll numbers much either.

The last place I’d like to be right now is in Guiliani’s shoes. At 38% there’s nowhere to go but down.
Something similar happened where I live in Ontario. When I said Mike Harris would succeed Bob Rae as Premier, people scoffed and said Harris was an unknown, he’s running at 9%, etcetera. I said that’s where I’d want to be with 10 months to go.
And this is more than 10 months. A week is a lifetime in politics. Read the polls following McCain’s speech today and get back to me!
