We won't produce grinding poverty on the part of many like the joys of the Victorian Era, oh no. I'm always fascinated by those who think that just because Dickens wrote novels that the society he wrote about must have been made up out of whole cloth. Somehow they think that the free market is just so magical that it will cure, if not all ills, enough to leave it up to private charities to fix what's left. Of course this has never, ever happened in history. It's just that the poor were pretty much ignored most of the time and thus are invisible in the minds of those who believe in certain myths.
