The End Of The Huck-A-Boom?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Huckabee

Is Mike Huckabee a likable guy? Yep. Does he know what he’s talking about? Ehh…

From Washington Monthly:

Economic policy? How about a 30% sales tax? Foreign policy? He likes Tom Friedman and Frank Gaffney, two pop commentators with almost nothing in common. Energy policy? Let’s eliminate oil imports by 2017. Immigration policy? Ship everyone back to Mexico. Etc. It’s grade school stuff.

And not to beat this into the ground, but what’s really astounding about this is that nobody actually seems to care much. But eventually somebody will, because eventually this weird combination of barstool ignorance and internet-email-list credulity is bound to produce a howler of the kind that the press likes to latch onto. There’s no telling what it will be, but it’s coming, and when it does the Huckabee boomlet will be over.

I tend to agree. You keep digging and more stuff keeps popping up that will make GOP voters think twice. Maybe not the faithful in Iowa, but certainly those in the later primary states.

Of course, maybe it won’t. Maybe the evangelicals really have taken the party over and can force their nominee through. After all, this isn’t 1988 where they were a force, but not a juggernaut. And Huckabee is much more impressive than Pat Robertson.

One thing’s for sure. There’s not much time left until we find out.

  1. TVV Says:

Why is it assumed that the only reason to vote for Huckabee is because of his faith? Or that the only people who would vote for him are the religious right?

Our “conservative” leaders are the same people who gave us Bush seven years ago. They are not to be trusted or listened to. A lot of the so-called conservative establishment are in fact RINOs.

Huckabee on Immigration - doesn’t it mean something that the founder of the MINUTEMEN has endorsed him? Maybe that’s why Tancredo seemed especially ticked at Huckabee in the debate today.

Huckabee on Taxes - who else running supports the Fair Tax and the abolition of the IRS, the Income Tax and the Corporate Tax. If this sounds like “liberal” to you, then it is possible that your IQ could be only double your tax bracket.

Huckabee - the favorite of Democrats? Are you kidding? They started worrying about the long shot of his candidacy last year. The guy the Democrats really want is Rudy Giuliani. He’s got more dirt on him than Pig Pen from the Peanuts. They can attack Mitt Romney on being a flip flopper and for looking and acting like Joe Isuzu, the car salesman from the 80’s commercials. They can attack Thompson on age (today was the first debate in which he appeared to be fully awake). Huckabee is the best shot for the Republicans - and he can beat Hillary. But if the GOP “conservative” RINO-led folks who will do whatever the good folks at Fox News tell them to do reject this guy, they’ll simply get what they deserve - and what we all fear - when Hillary gets inaugurated on 1/20/09.
