Edwards For Attorney General?

Novak floats a theory that Obama is reaching out to Edwards, and I suppose if there’s a job John IS qualified for in an Obama presidency, it’s in AG’s office..

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Illinois Democrats close to Sen. Barack Obama are quietly passing the word that John Edwards will be named attorney general in an Obama administration.

Installation at the Justice Department of multimillionaire trial lawyer Edwards would please not only the union leaders supporting him for president but organized labor in general. The unions relish the prospect of an unequivocal labor partisan as the nation’s top legal officer.

In public debates, Obama and Edwards often seem to bond together in alliance against front-running Sen. Hillary Clinton. While running a poor third, Edwards could collect a substantial bag of delegates under the Democratic Party’s proportional representation. Edwards then could try to turn his delegates over to Obama in the still unlikely event of a deadlocked Democratic National Convention.

True? Well, we don’t know yet, but if Obama isn’t trying to make overtures to Edwards he’s not a smart campaigner. Like it or not, Barack needs John’s delegates in order to beat Hillary, and this type of quid pro quo could be just the thing to put him over the top.

UPDATE:
So what’s Edwards’ Plan B?

Conversely, assuming Edwards gets enough delegates to make him Kingmaker, how would an endorsement of Clinton affect the party?

I think it would be seen as a vote for the establishment and would alienate two important voting blocks in the democratic party, the youth and the black vote. Personally, I do not think, especially based on media coverage over the last few days, that the youth would react well to this scenario. I really think either Hillary needs to win this contest convincingly, or Edwards needs to push Obama over the top.

I think James is absolutely right. Edwards can’t throw his support behind Clinton, but he could support no one. I am excited about the AG idea though. I don’t think Edwards did a great job as VP candidate last time, but I love his message this time around. He can do more as AG during this administration than sitting at the bottom of the ticket and ‘waiting his turn’.

Of course there is a job waiting for him once he throws his support behind Obama. I don’t think it is Attorney General though. Most likely SEI. He is more qualified for that position.
