Right now I’m reading Marketing to Moviegoers: A Handbook of Strategies Used by Major Studios and Independents.. Here’s my meme…

Activision alleged the conglomerate’s Paramount Pictures studio did not adequately maintain the Star Trek franchise, after Activision signed a 10-year video game licensing deal in 1998. Only one Star Trek movie had been made since the pact was signed. Several weeks later, Viacom later files a cross-complaint suing Activision.

I know, stimulating stuff, right? But do remember that entertainment is one of our key exports. Many forget this, and while I think it can be argued that this does us both help and harm, I believe it’s doing a lot more of the former than the latter.

Well, I can’t speak to Activision’s legal case, but considering the track record of the Star Trek game titles they did produce (mostly mediocre fare, just like the Trek TV series and movies of that era), I don’t have much sympathy for their licensing deal going sour.

BTW the Trek gaming license has since been picked up by Bethesda Softworks. I wonder whether they’ll be producing any titles connected to the J.J. Abrams film currently in production.
