Former DNC Chair Switches to Obama

Another day, another superdelegate for Barack Obama. Later today, former DNC chairman Joe Andrew will announce he’s switching his allegiance from Hillary Clinton to Obama. In a letter explaining his decision, he said:

A vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote to continue this process, and a vote to continue this process is a vote that assists John McCain.

While I was hopeful that a long, contested primary season would invigorate our party, the polls show that the tone and temperature of the race is now hurting us. John McCain, without doing much of anything, is now competitive against both of our remaining candidates. We are doing his work for him and distracting Americans from the issues that really affect all of our lives.

Andrew said he decided on Obama after the Illinois senator took a principled stand against the gas tax holiday supported by Clinton and McCain. He also thought Obama showed mettle under fire while handling the Rev. Wright controversy.

This brings Obama to within 19 superdelegates of Clinton. I’m starting to think this will indeed be over before the convention.

I think that is true. It could be over Wednesday if Obama could close the deal in Indiana and manage to not lose in NC. Worst case, there will be no new information after Puerto Rico, so there is no reason for the supes not to pull the trigger in June, well before the convention.
