What country club???????? Barack put himself thru college/universtiy. Then paid off his student loans. All this with no finacial help from his family that I have heard of. He is not of country club stock like Rove, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc etc of this despicable administration. He will work to fix this nation from the destruction that the current administration has put is and will do it with style!!!!

CP, you hit the nail on the head, and Obama touched on this notion in his book, “The Audacity of Hope.” In the third chapter, “Politics,” he address why so many politicians eventually come out seeming like such crude figures, despite often being very likable, intelligent, well-thought, and honest people. And then goes on to try and explain how he eventually found himself trying to find those negative traits in himself.

“One place to start my inquiry was to understand the nature of ambition, for in this regard at least, senators are different. Few people end up being United States senators by accident; at a minimum it requires a certain megalomania, a belief that of all the gifted people in your state, you are somehow uniquely qualified to speak on their behalf; a belief sufficiently strong that you are willing to endure the sometimes uplifting, occasionally harrowing, but always slightly ridiculous process we call campaigns.”

And in this area, both you CP, and the senator from Illinois, have hit the mark. It should hardly strike us as surprising when any of our elected officials come across, to any extent, as arrogant. And if it requires megalomania to acquire a seat in the senate, then outright arrogance ought to be a somewhat forgivable offense as long as it doesn’t manifest itself in such a way that it prohibits the smooth running of government affairs.

This holds true with top-end athletes. To compete at the highest level in any affair, requires a person to have some sort of highly developed sense of self-worth; typically vastly inflated. And if I can not only forgive, but completely condone that from an athlete, than I ought to extent that same privilege to others.

It’s kind of hard not to sound arrogant when you have to get up in front of everyone for a year and a half and talk about how you are the best person for the office of President of the United State, and how you’re ideas are better suited to be the President of the United States than other people’s ideas… isn’t it?
