Palin Won’t Cooperate With TrooperGate Investigation

From MSNBC:

McCain campaign spokesman Ed O’Callaghan told a news conference Monday that the governor, the Republican nominee for vice president, will not cooperate as long as the investigation “remains tainted.” He said he doesn’t know whether Palin’s husband would challenge a subpoena issued to compel his cooperation.

The campaign insists the investigation has been hijacked by Democrats. It says it can prove Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan was fired because of insubordination on budget issues — not because he refused to fire a state trooper who had divorced Palin’s sister.

Okay, well let’s see the proof then. And then we can judge this against the merits of the other allegations, which included numerous phone calls to Monegan about trooper Wooten from Palin’s staff.

Oh, and let’s not forget that one of Palin’s closet ethics advisers has called for her to apologize.

More as it develops…

UPDATE:
Apparently the person who cast the deciding vote to subpoena Todd Palin a few days ago is Charles Huggins, a Republican state senator from Palin’s home town…

Sen. Charlie Huggins, the vice chairman of the Alaska Legislature’s Senate Judiciary Committee, wore camouflage pants to Friday’s hearing, but they didn’t help him blend in among the coats, ties and dress shirts of other lawmakers and national news correspondents. [...]

He went on to make an impassioned plea for government transparency and honesty in this “new era” of Alaska politics. A number of lawmakers, including U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens, have been indicted or convicted in a wide-ranging federal corruption probe.

“I see all this duck-foot action under the water,” he said, referring to back-room discussions about the investigation. “Let’s just get the facts on the table. The sooner the better.”

Agreed. Why not get the facts out there?

It sounds like Sen. Huggins is confident there’s nothing she needs to hide… Or he’s an honest non-partisan… Or he’s hoping she’ll get reamed when the truth comes out.

    Any bets?

They throwing the blame at each other, but what I do want to point out is that PALIN (as in the gov’nuh) lodged the initial complaint, not Wooten. Wooten’s union apparently lodged it later, possibly when the focus was on her, but who knows.

Regardless, if what Palin says Wooten did is true, which I didn’t see either report refute, then what her staffer said rings true: why was the guy around so long? And did she offer him another job later? Man, she almost seems too nice, especially with the whole ex-brother-in-law thing (which MANY people would’ve done and not even drawn ire). This is extreme political theater. I’m guessing the subpoena her husband received was the last straw.

  3. Tully Says:

You do know that Huggins was appointed to the state Senate by Palin’s GOP nemesis, Murkowski? The incumbent governor she beat out for the office? That Huggins is part of the Old Guard GOP that Palin roundly thrashed for corruption and insider dealing after taking office? That he’s opposed Palin throughout her tenure as Governor, including voting against the Trans-Canada Natural Gas Pipeline she engineered?

You do know those things, don’t you?

It’s naive and simplistic to believe that everything is always about party. It’s not.

  4. Justin Gardner Says:

Palin has said the investigation has been hijacked by Democrats. And yet a Republican voted to issue the subpoenas. That’s her being naive and simplistic for characterizing it as a Dem witch hunt, not me.

Also, the state’s Legislative Council is made up of eight Repubs and five Dems and they voted in July to look into this. I suppose all of those Repubs are after her too?

See, I know things too. They’re different things, but they’re still valid.
