"Anything the Rethugs do to push their exclusionary platform further to the right is a good thing. Once they exclude 80% of the electorate, they will finally go the way of the Whig party."

Besides, in the meantime it's fun watching their heads explode!

Does anyone believe that a republican could have won in this election cycle? Bush's erratic, non-conservative actions combined with McCain's stumbling in the dark campaign did more damage to the GOP than any particular plank. "Conservative" political positions can certainly be packaged as palatable to the masses, just as neo-prog positions were packaged by Obama. The GOP lacks that finesse, and combined with the millstone of 8 years of Bush, it creates a no-win situation.

Dan:
Thanks! And it is an uphill battle, at least in the short-run - although the Rod Dreher's response and the comments thereto, combined with the existence of Culture11 itself, give me hope that the cycle won't take more than a few years to play out (although the damage is going to take a while to fully repair). I just don't know what direction conservatism will go once it does.

This is one of the most intelligent things I've read about the difficulties plaguing the current Republican Party.

And the responses at Culture11 show that you're fighting an uphill battle.

In a land war in Asia.
