Joe The Political Consultant, Redux

Oh, how I would love to have been there:

['Joe The Plumber'] Wurzelbacher opposes the stimulus and said he questioned why the government can’t just cut its bills like other people do. He also advised staffers to take a harder line on the legislation: “Republicans on the Hill are afraid of saying too much,” he noted.Further recommendations from the Karl Rove of the Commode included having “someone go in there and kick some ass.”

Staffers emphasized that he was there to give a different perspective on the stimulus debate — not to effect serious policy change.

Wesley Denton, communications director for Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), whose office coordinates the group, said, “I think staffers were happy to have him there and hear his perspective. He’s an interesting person for staffers to hear from, and it certainly helps us get an understanding about how the stimulus debate is playing out in the country with regular folks.”

The ‘Karl Rove of The Commode’. Priceless.

I talked about this yesterday but I think Justin said it best: “There are no words…”  How is anyone supposed to take the Republican party seriously when they are taking advice from a guy who:

[...]has been both a less-than-constant supporter of McCain (he once said the senator gave answers about the financial bailout that “appalled” him) and a less-than-ideal idol (he turned out to have been practicing his trade without a license).

His name isn’t really Joe — it’s Samuel — and the story he told Barack Obama on the campaign trail wasn’t exactly true.

He’s also had some tax troubles, which might have made him an awkward choice for a sage as Republicans take aim at the Obama administration for the tax woes of Tom Daschle and Timothy Geithner.

Oh, but he’s a great person to have around the conservative thinktank — you know, with his vast knowledge of global issues and his indispensable political acumen. And since when is a guy who is trying to get a book deal, traveling to the mid-east for PJTV and allegedly considering a run for Congress classified as a ‘regular folk’?

He isn’t.

Newsflash Republicans: It’s time for you to take back your party.  You’ve got fresh blood at the helm in the form of Michael Steele.  Take advantage of that momentum and start to rebuild the GOP from the inside.  Don’t let any more average ‘Joes’ distract you.

Sadly the GOP will never listen to Michael Steele and instead would rather listen to man who’s real name in Samuel!

I find the obsession of GOP critics with JTP comical. It suits the eagerness of folks to spew anti-GOP vitriol. So they pretend that JTP has been granted the exact same status as every other “consultant”.

Only a moron would think he’s anywhere near the inner circle. The GOP is smart enough to know that despite his faults, JTP has populist appeal with their rank and file. So they’ve co-opted him, brought him on board in a minor role, and they’re using him as a sort of a canary in a coal mine.

And that’s a great analogy, because a canary makes a GREAT “consultant” if you are worried about fumes. And JTP has a brain of similar size to a canary.

But all this manufacturing of stunned horror, as though JTP #1 has nothing at all to offer the GOP, and #2 has been accorded smething akin to Gingrichian insight status? Spare me. It rings false, and reminds me of how republicans behaved in the wake of Cindy Sheehan.

I laughed until I cried. Then I realized how depressing this is and cried for real. Are the Republicans trying to implode themselves? They are taking serious advice from a damned real life Dale Gribble.
