North Korea Rattles Sabers
By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in Foreign Policy, Hillary Clinton, North KoreaWell, Joe Biden did warn us that our adversaries would challenge Barack Obama if he was elected. Looks like North Korea is doing just that. In a statement released today, the government in Pyongyang said the North is prepared for war against the South and would consider retaliating if the U.S. and South Korea go through with planned training exercises.
The North Korean saber rattling corresponds to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s visit to Seoul today. As of yet, the U.S. has issued no formal response, but I imagine the Obama administration will not be pleased. Look for U.S./North Korea relations to remain as strained as ever.

Heh, saber rattling. Mostly theater if you ask me. Fact is, we can probably run out the clock until Kim-jung-ILL is Kim Jung-DEAD. Then we’ll take it from there.
We’ll go through with the training because we would never back down to a threat. Which, like, duh, EVERYONE KNOWS.
Then NK will “consider” retaliating like they have just threatened. Now, just what comprises retaliation for training exercises, I cannot imagine. But it matters not, except for this: the fact that nothing comes to mind as appropriate retaliation is a very good clue as to what NK will do in response to our training exercises.
Nothing. Upon careful consideration, they WON’T retaliate. But they’ll make clear that they are very upset and that the unstated retaliation was a very near thing and that are exercising patience, forbearance, and indeed magnanimity by not exercising their unstated powerful retaliation.
It reminds me of a documentary on the mating rituals of birds…”the speckled blabadee puffs its anterior feathers to give the appearance of size and then takes 3 steps forward and 3 steps back, turning a full revolution while chirping its mating call, which sounds like “nodda-week-doosh, nodda-week-doosh,nodda-week-doosh.”

North Korea does this type of thing every time to get attention. If there is a transition of power going on in North Korea as Hillary Clinton hinted at today, then it could turn more dangerous. Having a 20 something running a nuclear power will require a little more careful consideration than normal since he will be trying to show no weakness.
