Steele Threatens To Quit Over Funding Decision?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Money, Republicans

I shared news about the increasingly irrelevant Steele a couple weeks ago and it looks like he’s fighting back.

And hey, good for him for fighting back, but my guess is that many want him out because they think he’s too moderate and too mouthy.

I mean, when you say that Romney’s mormonism was one of the reasons he didn’t become the Republican nominee…maybe you need to rethink whether or not you should be Chairman of one of the most powerful political parties in the world.

I’m just saying…

Regardless, Fox News has the scoop:

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele told FOX News that part of his job is to “manage the money” and suggested that if committee members strip him of that authority he’ll step aside.

“They can contemplate all they want to, but the reality is if they want a figurehead chairman you can have a figurehead chairman, but it won’t be Michael Steele,” he said.

Steele aides insist the chairman was not threatening to quit, but merely to fight over retaining his authority. But his comments reflect the persistent tension within the Republican National Committee over his chairmanship.

Steele’s biggest problem now is nobody really respects him since he’s turned into a weekly gaffe machine and thus become the symbol of the GOP’s inability to find any real leadership. So I do not see this ending well for him, but maybe he has a few tricks up his sleeve.

More as it develops…

He agreed the Hopkins doctors that went to the black sites for CIA were okay even though they weren’t federal employees and on contracts. He got his job as Republican leader. Pelosi and Goss and the others got their jobs and promotions by agreeing torture was okay for the military. The difference is they didn’t realize that it’s only okay for the military, not CIA or contractors. They should all quit as stupid losers.

Moderate and mouthy? How about an ill-conceived gimmick to be the GOP’s Obama? Discuss.

I think you are off base in the comment on the Mormonism. The GOP base did have a problem with his being a Mormon. Steele was just being honest. He says some dumb things no doubt, but he was being honest there.

I might also ask why is it taken as completely acceptable that someone without religion is almost completely incapable of being elected and someone with belief is incapable of being judged on their beliefs no matter how questionable they are? Shouldn’t there be a point at which unbelievable beliefs should call into questions someone’s judgment or honesty?

Yes, Steele was being honest, and it’s good insight. But if you’re leading the GOP that’s just something you don’t say. That’s more along the lines of what you’d say if you were on The McLaughlin Group.

As far as religion goes, that’s just our country. I don’t think it’s fair either, but an atheist can’t be elected President right now, and you it’s a third rail to question somebody’s faith. I think that’ll eventually change, but right now this is how it is.

Justin, which way you wanna have it? You’ve been relentlessly hammering the GOP for moving the wrong way and being in thrall to base wingnuts. Then when a member of party leadership calls the base on something substantive, you claim he ought not to have done so.

What gives? Absent such actions, how does the GOP move in the allegedly more reasonable direction you advocate?
