My guess is that the Israelis, who have time and time again compromised on the settlement issue - including the dismantling of all of the Gazan settlements . . .

Netanyahu seems to think we secretly promised the Israelis they could ignore their promises on the settlements issue. Which either means Bibi is lying, or Mr. Bush is not just a liar but an incredible fool. If true it means the Israelis never intended to compromise.

They didn't bail on Gaza to bring peace, they bailed on Gaza because it was more trouble than it was worth.

Yeah fantastic speech, imagine if we had a president who was intelligent and could deliver a message that strong for the past 8 years. Imagine how things could be different.

Chris, if you didn't hear Obama's speech today, and I gave you a transcript, along with one of the many speeches President Bush made to a Muslim audience, you would never know the difference.

Obama only sets a "new tone" because people like you hear only what you want to hear. It is the perciever that has changed the tone, not the speaker.

My guess is that the Israelis, who have time and time again compromised on the settlement issue - including the dismantling of all of the Gazan settlements, the withdrawal of thousands of west-bank settlers and offering 97% of all land occupied after 1967 - are using this "natural growth" issue as a bargaining chip with the Obama administration. So far, Obama has made no signs to get tough with Iran over the nuclear program. Israel is running out of time and perhaps they are trying to gain leverage.

The first assist has come from the Israeli settler community. Their outrage will only help convince Palestinians that America really is going to be more even-handed in addressing their concerns. (Just another example of Obama contriving to have his opponents be his most effective allies.)

Unfortunately, I'm less optimistic that the current Israeli government will be willing to do anything sensible. But if the US is serious about reining in the settlements, I could see the government fracturing, and new elections n Israel. As always, too obviously alienating the US is likely to be a disaster for an Israeli government.

Agree, Justin, that the settlement issue must be resolved. But there are other issues, like disarming and mainstreaming Hamas (if that's possible). Israel isn't going to do anything meaningful as long as they believe that the rockets can start falling at any time.

Also, great speech by Barack Hussein Obama. Hopefully we can all use his full name without issue now. A little troubled by his comment on zakat, but I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he plans to make it easier for people of all faiths (and none) to give charitably.
