These early polls are more about name recognition for the general public. The left keeps Palin in the news with their bashing of her. Huckabee is out in front of conservatives with a well regarded Fox News variety show similar to late night shows on the nets. Romney is visible only to those tuned in to politics and paying attention.

Huckabee had more Executive branch experience than any of the other candidates, Republican or Democrat, in the last election. His "Fair Tax" idea will appeal to some conservatives, but I think it will scare independents (a 30% sales tax!)

Yeah, this doesn't surprise me much.Huckabee transmits a strong vibe of being thoughful, reasonable, and likeable, and that REALLY matters. We're not of like minds, but I have some respect for him. I think folks who dismiss Huckabee are grossly underestimating him.

You're on target to talk about opponents and how they can effect the outcome come primary season. After all, how did McCain win the last nom?IMO, it had an awful lot to do with other candidates splitting votes. Romney would have been a LOT stronger last time if Huckabee and Guiliani hadn't siphoned off votes, for example. If you have like 5 candidates, and 1 and 2 are similar and 3 and 4 are similar, 5 may well emerge in front even if s/he is no more popular than the other 4.

1. I think Huck has potential because he is religious enough for the social conservatives, but he can speak reasonably and calmly enough to sway a moderate.

2. The bigger question I have is with those Palin numbers: how is it 62% would consider supporting her when 60% consider her unqualified!?! That means a bunch of people would support her even though they think her unqualified, or am I missing something?

I like Huckabee, but I won't vote Republican again. They still don't have the issues resolved with the RINOs and conservatives. I'll never vote Democrat again. I'm going to vote Independent. It won't split any kind of party vote because Republicans aren't even together and Democrats are going to be slaughtered in the next election. This next election will be the one for the Independent.

Mitt should be scared by those numbers. He already ran, just as Huck did, and people dont find him qualified? I really dont see how you can change that impression after he has had such exposure. He isnt an unknown and he isnt doing anything that would increase his qualifications at this point. though niether is huck. As for pawlenty, maybe cilizza will stop writing about him now that so few gop members find him qualified.
