Poll: Trump’s Numbers Collapse

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Polls, Trump

Even if he were serious, I doubt he’ll run now. Last week was devastating for the “Trump as a serious presidential candidate” narrative.

First, the birth certificate was released and even though he took credit for that, it was clear that Obama came out looking better than Trump on that one.

Then Bin Laden was killed.

Done and done.

So now this…

Donald Trump has had one of the quickest rises and falls in the history of Presidential politics. Last month we found him leading the Republican field with 26%. In the space of just four weeks he’s dropped all the way down to 8%, putting him in a tie for fifth place with Ron Paul.

Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney are at the top of the GOP race with 19% and 18% respectively. Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin are further back at 13% and 12%, followed by Trump and Paul at 8%, Michele Bachmann at 7%, and Tim Pawlenty at 5%.

Not only that, the GOP faithful simply don’t like him…

As Trump got more and more exposure over the last month Republicans didn’t just decide they weren’t interested in having him as their nominee- they also decided they flat don’t like him. Only 34% of GOP voters now have a favorable opinion of Trump to 53% who view him in a negative light.

And even among birthers he doesn’t even reach double digits…

By the way, I love that 34% of the GOP still doesn’t believe Obama was born here AFTER he released his birth certificate. Jeezus H…

In any event, I said on this blog once Trump started making presidential noises that he should run as an Independent. If he has any chance of actually having a serious run, he should pivot soon into that mode, although I really think the birther issue has made him radioactive to pretty much any reasonable voter.

More as it develops…

I actually don’t think poll numbers will stop him. The birther rabble-rousing taught me that he is motivated by something other than the feasibility of support. He had a delusional idea about the amount of support he had on that issue, and even when it was more and more apparent people overall were turned off by his pursuit of this – he continued.

He also has a large pot of personal capital – making the need to rely on the support of many key funders less important.
