Microsoft HoloLens Augmented Reality Netflix Application

0

It seems that Netflix is planning to develop an application for the Microsoft’s HoloLens augmented reality headset. We remind you that Netflix has mentioned in a job listing for Windows Senior Software Engineer that it is planning to support “HoloLens and VR devices.”

According to a Netflix spokesperson, the company has already built a few basic applications for VR headsets such as Samsung Gear VR or Google Daydream, which is allowing users to watch the company’s existing catalog in some kind of a virtual theater setting.

The same person mentioned that Netflix is planning to make some efforts for HoloLens also. The company has already started to create 360 degree promotional footage, but it has not fully embraced the Virtual Reality as its own medium.

Reed Hastings, CEO at Netflix, has shown his skepticism regarding the VR, mentioning that these devices have been built only for video games. Well, it seems that after all, the VR devices can be also used by Netflix to stream TV shows and movies.

However, let’s not forget about Hulu, a company that has has been investing in its own VR content, including a comedy series and weekly news show. On the other hand, Amazon has not talked much about its own efforts, but it has also a staff that is producing and distributing VR originals.

We think that it is just a matter of time until AR and VR devices will make their way to popular streaming applications. For now, we can say that there are not many streaming applications that are supporting these types of devices, but it is surely something that we will see in the future.

We remind you that the Microsoft’s HoloLens Augmented Reality (Developer Edition) has been released back in March 2016 for Windows 10 OS.

What are your thoughts about VR and AR being supported by Netflix and other streaming applications?
