Iraq Not Sitting Well With Increasing Number Of Republicans
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in WarPeople are disenchanted with death. Imagine that.
I have some serious respect for the men and women in the Armed Forces. Sure, not everything has gone smoothly in Iraq. I hesitate to even mention incredibly bad mistakes like Abu Ghraib, but these things have happened and we need to move past them.
However, the simple fact of the matter is that the war in Iraq has not reduced terrorism. Sure, it got rid of a ruthless dictator (who we now see in his tighty whities), but it left a legacy of death and destruction that most Iraqis will never forget.
Did I oppose the war? Yes. I didn’t think Bush was being honest with the American people and polls show that some are starting to see it that way.
Do I think it’s good that Saddam is out? Of course. I have to accept the reality of the present. However, while the guy was ruthless, he wasn’t threatening us directly. Are we going to continue to clean up all the messes in the world? I think it was probably a better idea to keep resources where we needed them in Afghanistan to fully drive out the Taliban and catch Osama.
Do I think we should get out of Iraq as soon as we can? Yes. Our soldiers can continue to fight battles street by street and house by house and face an uncertain future, or they can come home and enjoy the freedom and liberty they hold so dear.
Now Republicans of all stripes are talking about withdrawing from Iraq ASAP.
From the , WSJ:
“In a similar fashion, rumblings are starting within President Bush’s camp about the uncertain prospects for drawing down troop levels in Iraq. Over the weekend, Republican Rep. Walter Jones of North Carolina called for the U.S. to set a date to withdraw troops from Iraq. Last week, Florida Sen. Mel Martinez, a Republican and former Bush cabinet member who strongly supported the Iraq war effort early on, said he was “discouraged” by the lack of progress and the inability of the Pentagon to draw down U.S. forces.”
Let’s hope they get their wish, if for nothing else to save some families grief over losing somebody they love.
