Peter Jennings Has Passed Away

Peter Jennings died Sunday due to complications from lung cancer.

This is what he said about anchoring the evening news:

“There are a lot of people who think our job is to reassure the public every night that their home, their community and their nation is safe… I don’t subscribe to that at all. I subscribe to leaving people with essentially â€â€? sorry it’s a cliche â€â€? a rough draft of history. Some days it’s reassuring, some days it’s absolutely destructive.”– Peter Jennings

Associated Press: ABC News Anchor Peter Jennings Dies at 67

In my opinion, he was the best of the three major network anchors. On the occasions that I watched television news, I would tune in to Peter Jennings. He will be missed.

    I agree. Jennings was the best of the three nightly anchors. He always gave more of a foreign correspondent perspective on the news and I always liked that.

    He was my favorite too. Very sobering that he died due to something he stopped doing 20 years ago.

    He had the most recognizable voice on TV for me. I will miss it. I never even knew he had lung cancer until last night.

    Jennings was a rare man indeed. When I was little, we couldn’t pick up ABC, but my wife grew up watching Peter Jennings, and over the last few years I have come to know his work and to respect him. As soon as the special report came on, her eyes grew a little misty and red; after a brief silence she said, “My favorite newsman is gone.”
