It Costs $100 Million To Be President?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Elections, Money

Think you can be President? Well, you better start developing some serious netroots because it’s going to cost you a pretty penny to mount a serious bid for the most powerful job in the world in 2008.

From the ashington Post:

…many analysts believe that 2008 will be a clash of such titanic intensity that the nominees will reject public funding — and the spending limits that govern it — even for the fall campaign. If so, most bets are that each major-party candidate would need to raise in excess of $400 million by the Nov. 4, 2008, election. Candidates would want to raise as much of that money as early as possible, so as not to waste precious campaign time holding fundraisers.

Steve Elmendorf, the deputy manager for Kerry’s general election campaign against Bush, predicted that accepting matching funds is a “thing of the past in the primary and the general.” Public funding of presidential campaigns was started in 1976 in the wake of the Watergate scandal.

A final factor inflating the pressure to raise money early is Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.). She has a proven ability to raise money on a national scale, and if she runs for president in 2008 she will raise the stakes for competitors in both parties.

If anybody wants to give me that much money to run in 2008, I will. Hear that H. Ross? I’m your man!

Where is Ross anyway? I went to see him speak when I was a kid, and it was entertaining.

I will run for Pres also, if someone will provide me with funding. I’m a former old-school Republican that has turned into a liberal, but I am fiscally conservative, and I do not want the government to be involved in our personal lives. (I guess the “liberal” thing would probably kill my chances because I like the gays, the minorities, the environment, alternative forms of energy, abortions for everyone, and cats).
