Reuters Photographer Adnan Hajj Given the Heave-Ho
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Media, The WorldGood call by Reuters to pull all of his pics.
And as I suspected, he was given access to upload photos directly to the world without editorial oversight. That’s a mistake Reuters won’t be making again any time soon.
From…well…Reuters:
The two altered photographs were among 43 that Hajj filed directly to the Reuters Global Pictures Desk since the start of the conflict on July 12 rather than through an editor in Beirut, as was the case with the great majority of his images.
Filing drills have been tightened in Lebanon and only senior staff will now edit pictures from the Middle East on the Global Pictures Desk, with the final check undertaken by the Editor-in-Charge, Reuters said.
Now back to your regularly scheduled photojournalism.

What choice did Reuters have?

“The facts – without spin”
That’s one of Reuters advertising slogans. Reuters richly deserves every dollop of egg on its face for this. This is hardly the first time Hajj has been caught doing this sort of thing. They should have fired him months ago, instead of giving him free reign. Their policy on spin is apparently “Don’t ask, don’t tell”.

ReutersGate/4
