Same Sex Unions Recognized In New Jersey

First the good news…

TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) — New Jersey’s Supreme Court opened the door to gay marriage Wednesday, ruling that homosexuals are entitled to the same rights as heterosexuals, but leaving it to lawmakers to legalize same-sex unions.

The high court gave lawmakers 180 days to rewrite marriage laws to either include same-sex couples or create a new system of civil unions for them.

The ruling is similar to the 1999 decision in Vermont that led to civil unions there, which offer the benefits of marriage, but not the name.

“Although we cannot find that a fundamental right to same-sex marriage exists in this state, the unequal dispensation of rights and benefits to committed same-sex partners can no longer be tolerated under our state Constitution,” Justice Barry T. Albin wrote for the 4-3 majority’s decision.

Then the mediocre reality from this ruling…

My guess is this could re-energize those fundamentlist voters who weren’t going to vote (or remind those who were going to cast their ballot for a Dem) that the Repubs are the party who will fight for religio-politics and keep the gays from getting the same rights as everybody else. And remember, we’re not even talking marriage here.

Is this the unintended October surprise for the Dems? Could this single issue tip the scales in November?

    Relax, everybody just has to listen to the candidates that are in their focus of interest and place their vote on what they believe is best for them. Everything else is just background noise that gets in the way, and these ‘lightning rod’ issues simply muddy the water making it harder to see what is right for you. Same sex marraige, notifying parents of under age teenage abortion, gays in the military…I don’t give a damm. I’ve got 3 kids in or close to being in college. I need help and this white house is raising the cost of student loans to cut their pork-ridden budget. I’m in the construction business and I just wanna know one way or the other what the law is. I see older Americans work for $8, $9 per hour when I can’t get a Mexican for under $10. What’s the right thing to do when getting health care will offset much of your profit for the year. Who’s doin somethin that matters to me ? Nobody – it’s all bullshit, and we LET IT HAPPEN ! No more, I say, no more.

    Sorry, BenG, none of that matters. Let the economy go to pot, let the corporations own us all, let Iraq go to hell, and let us keep being held hostage by oil dependency. As long as we keep boys from kissing, we’ll be okay.

    I can’t understand why more people don’t get that.

    so, Nick, you have no problems with girls kissing ? I think that’s descrimination based on gender. They have laws about that stuff. But do we care ? Hell no. And why are you smiling. You seem more bummed out then me ! Now don’t get me wrong, the Dems ran their course and I wasn’t very happy with affirmitive action, welfare state, union wages nonsense either. But if anyone can vote for the powers at be after seeing how blatantly pathetic Bush’s 180* role reversal has been in the past 24 hrs due to the numbers and the degree of panic, and how we’ll do anything, say anytheng to get our side re-elected, how can you not be pissed off. But how could you get conned so easily? Go save the unborn babies while your children get f*#*

    Dos, it’s like they had a union meeting. All of the sudden wages went up, the asked for vans to car pool, wanted a place with tables and chairs for lunch. It happened all about the same time they were havin those demonstrations. But it’s not about that. I respect many of them. They work hard, act polite, try to learn all they can, and do the best they can under the circumstances. This can’t be good for them either, it’s just not right. All I know is some big exec is gettin richer from all of it and, even though I ain’t complaining bout someone making an honest buck, I don’t see why we should be subsidizing peoples greed. Anyway, can’t help but get a chuckle out of all the crazyness before election day. You enjoyin the madness too?
