Americans Trust Iraq Study Group

…much more than they do Bush.

Certainly not surprising, and definitely not hard to imagine, but what does that mean for our Iraq policy going forward? Will Bush pay attention or simply stick to his guns?

More from Gallup:

Regardless of their familiarity with the Iraq Study Group, more than 7 in 10 Americans support three of the group’s key recommendations in principle: withdrawing most combat troops from Iraq by 2008, negotiating directly with the Iranians and Syrians about regional security, and jumpstarting peace talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians. A significantly higher percentage of Americans say they trust the Iraq Study Group to make recommendations about Iraq than say they trust President George W. Bush. Americans have the most trust in the military when it comes to decisions about doing what is right in Iraq.

And in an interesting note, Americans trust John McCain’s opinions almost as much as the Iraq Study Group. But do they know he wants to send in more troops? Unlikely.

Which tells us all we need to know about polls and the public in general, I suppose.

Maybe if people had been paying attention in the first place we wouldn’t be in this situation.

Instead, the public let blind patriotism (albeit stoked by lies and innuendo) dictate who they were going to support.

I could barely comprehend how Bush ALMOST won in 2000 (had to force myself not to launch into that tirade again), but the 2004 election continues to make my head hurt just thinking about it.

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me–fool me again and again and again and again….sigh
