Mitt Is In

He looks the part, but is he really presidential material? After all, he’s abandoning a lot of his past views on social issues, and it screams of political opportunism. But he wouldn’t be the first to do so, nor the last. The Dems have their fair share of opportunists this time around too.
From one of my favorite new sites, Politico…
Romney has chiseled-out-of-granite features, a full, dark head of hair going a distinguished gray at the temples, and a barrel chest. On the morning that he announced for president, I bumped into him in the lounge of the Marriott and up close he is almost overpowering. He radiates vigor. And he can’t wait to stand next to John McCain on a stage and invite comparison. (McCain, who looks less hearty than Romney, was severely injured while fighting for his country as a Naval aviator. Romney never served in the military, though the band at his announcement played both “Anchors Aweigh and “The Marines’ Hymn.)
Regardless of his swing back to the right, I appreciated the way he mentioned religion in his annoucement. Basically, no talk of Jesus…just a creator…
The only mention of religion in Romney’s speech was: “I believe in God and I believe that every person in this great country, and every person on this grand planet, is a child of God. We are all sisters and brothers.
There’s no doubt about it, Romney is a serious player and probably the darkhorse in this three way race between McCain and Giuliani.
And maybe that’s a good thing…

This is likely because Romney is a Mormon, and the mainstream religious right has historically been ambivalent toward the Mormon church and its teachings (hence the slur “counterfeit Christianity” often used agianst them).

He never really was liberal towards social issues; he just said what he needed to say to run for governor against Ted Kennedy in Massachusetts some years back. His recent opponent was weak anyway so he could beat her regardless of social issues.
Romney, you could say, is the true political opportunist. Sort of like Kerry and Edwards being for the war when it was popular and against it when it became otherwise. My guess is that they were always anti-war but didn’t want to look weak.
BTW, is “Mitt” his full name that appears on his birth certificate? What kind of a name is Mitt anyway?
