Giuliani Speaks Truth To GOP
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Abortion
Rudy is the new straight talker. No doubt about it.
Giuliani made his sharpest case for moving beyond social issues this weekend in Iowa, telling The Des Moines Register, “Our party is going to grow, and we are going to win in 2008 if we are a party characterized by what we’re for, not if we’re a party that’s known for what we’re against.”Asked about abortion, he said, “Our party has to get beyond issues like that.”
The GOP and the modern conservative movement have always prided themselves on being the idea people. Rudy wants to regain that and capture the nation’s imagination.
Good for him, but easier said than done. He’s going to have a tough time convincing the social issues voters that he won’t abandon their fight to overturn Roe v. Wade.
I guess we’ll see if his tune is the same come January of next year.

I’ll tell ya, as a moderate R, my heart did flips of joy upon reading this. Rudy is da man, as far as I’m concerned, and very consistent with the goals of the RLC, an organization I recently joined, and had the pleasure of interviewing its exec. director, Kate Whitman.

There is no one I’d rather see leading the country than Rudy — particularly given the alternatives who have presented themselves so far. Nor is there anyone I’d rather see leading the GOP. Neither McCain nor Romney are trustworthy, Gingrich is full of bizarre ideas, and Thompson is too much like what we’ve got already. It’ll be a tough sell (pro-lifers are already going nuts about this quote) but it’s got to be done, or the GOP will become the SBC party and the Democrats will reign ascendant like they haven’t done since the New Deal.

Murder is slightly less constitutionally protected since Wednesday - Carhart v. Planned Parenthood, upheld the federal ban on partial-birth abortions without the escape-all exemption for the mother’s health (for abortionists, i.e. “mental” health). Job well done SCOTUS, moving in the right moral and Constitutional direction.
You would have thought someone would have posted something about this case around here — but I guess its outcome was not “centrist” enough?

Rudy Giuliani endorsed that opinion, for what it’s worth.
