“Candidate To Be Named Later” Leads GOP

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Polls

This is pretty interesting, and speaks to how disenchanted the GOPers are with their choices in 2008.

From the AP:

The latest Associated Press-Ipsos poll found that nearly a quarter of Republicans are unwilling to back top-tier hopefuls Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, John McCain or Mitt Romney, and no one candidate has emerged as the clear front-runner among Christian evangelicals. Such dissatisfaction underscores the volatility of the 2008 GOP nomination fight.

In sharp contrast, the Democratic race remains static, with Hillary Rodham Clinton holding a sizable lead over Barack Obama. The New York senator, who is white, also outpaces her Illinois counterpart, who is black, among black and Hispanic Democrats, according to a combined sample of two months of polls. [...]

A half year before voting begins, the survey shows the White House race is far more wide open on the Republican side than on the Democratic. The uneven enthusiasm about the fields also is reflected in fundraising in which Democrats outraised Republicans $80 million to $50 million from April through June, continuing a trend from the year’s first three months.

More Republicans have become apathetic about their top options over the past month. [...] A hefty 23 percent can’t or won’t say which candidate they would back, a jump from the 14 percent who took a pass in June.

The reason? Values and honesty…

Among the legions of undecided Republicans is Barbara Skogman, 72, a retired legal assistant from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She isn’t at all excited about any of the prospects. At one point, she favored McCain. At another, she was open to Giuliani. Now, she’s leaning slightly toward Romney but says she’s far from sold on him.

“I’m looking for a strong, honest person. Do you know of any?” she joked. She had an easy time detailing why she was queasy about each of the most serious contenders. “Isn’t that sad?” Then she reached a conclusion: “I just don’t know.”

Heh, well, we are talking about politics here, right? Bush struck everybody as a very forthright and honest guy, and he’s been one of the most secretive Presidents in the history of the office.

So, does this leave room for a dark horse? And if so, who’s the “honest” candidate?

    “…who’s the “honestâ€Â? candidate?” – jg

    Chuck Hagel

  2. I know! I know! Says:

This is an easy one… err…damn! It was on the tip of my tongue!

  3. Mike Says:

    *Ahem* Huckabee…

  4. Justin Gardner Says:

From what I’ve seen I’d agree with both. But Hagel certainly isn’t going to run as a GOPer if he runs.

  5. Corey Moore Says:

Honest candidate? The only two names in my head are Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee

  6. Ric Says:

Hmmm…. Honest Republican candidates are only visible to people like Barbra Skogman when there isn’t a media blackout. So, yes Barbra, I know of one…Ron Paul.

  7. Jim S Says:

I think the last six years tell us all we need to know about the ability of many Americans, especially those who tend to vote Republican to tell how honest and forthright a politician is.

  8. New Republican Says:

People are failing to realize the “None of the Above” represents Ron Paul supporters or soon to be supporters. He’s not included in the poll to it’s clear people see no other good choice worth voting for…

Ron Paul is winning most polls and online he’s winning by a landslide and he won the New Hampshire Straw Poll.

I’m a liberal and a new Ron Paul Republican!!

    I approve this message.

A more important point that people who didn’t look at the original poll results don’t realize is that what is characterized as “None of the Above” is actually a combination of “None of the Above and “Undecided”.

“Undecided,” where I come from, can mean both “I can’t decide which I dislike least” (which would fit with “None of the Above”) AND “I like several of them, just not one overwhelmingly yet” (which definitely does NOT fit with “None of the above”). Nothing like looking at the actual results to ruin a perfectly good headline.

  10. Austin, Texas loves Ron Paul Says:

    Ron Paul for me!

  11. WEVS1 Says:

“I’m a liberal and a new Ron Paul Republican!!”

What liberal policies, programs or perspectives of Paul’s do you support?

    What’s liberal about being:

    Anti-abortion?
    Anti-labor?
    Anti-immigration?

Ron Paul is just another paranoid American populist.
