Limbaugh Gets Off His Leash
By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in Conservatism, McCain, Partisan HacksRush Limbaugh, who has always had an abusive relationship with reality, has completely lost it. This from The Weekly Standard’s Michael Goldfarb quoting a piece in The New York Sun:
On Mr. Limbaugh’s program today, he said people should not be rushing to back Mr. McCain over issues of national security. The talk host said America’s direction in Iraq would not be substantially different, even if Mrs. Clinton or Mr. Obama were elected. “They are not going to surrender the country to Islamic radicalism or the war in Iraq,” Mr. Limbaugh said after mentioning the two Democratic senators by name. “They are not going to do that to themselves, despite what their base says.”
Goldfarb brings us back to reality:
There is no doubt that America’s direction in Iraq would be substantially different if a Democrat were elected in November. No well informed person could argue otherwise.
Yep. But Limbaugh and others on the unhinged right are operating in a fun-house mirror version of reality where McCain is the product of some vast liberal conspiracy (apparently perpetrated by a significant number of strong conservatives). It’s all off-the-wall crazy.
Limbaugh, Coulter, et. al. have long been the right’s half-crazed attack dogs. Let them into your house and it’s no surprise when they piss all over the furniture. If McCain wins big tonight, the Republican Party is going to have to figure out how to get its crazies back in the kennel and ready for the real fight this Fall.

So, now Coulter and Limbaugh are “dogs,” huh? Fine.
If the Republican Party can’t keep these dogs on a leash, maybe they need to do what the normal sane, clear-headed individual would do.

It is hard to overstate the animus toward McCain from the rabid right. It will be interesting to see if this last ditch effort will be enough to derail hi nomination.
No matter. In any mix of the leading candidates, the Republican Party is going to lose the 2008 Presidential election. Even if the Dems nominate Clinton, she is smart enough and ambitious enough to put Obama on the ticket, and retain his passionate supporters. Which means we are on a hellbound train for at least two years of single party Democratic Government with a real possibility of a 60 vote Democratic plurality in th Senate. The only silver lining is that they are unlikely to do as much damage in two years as it took the single party Republican government to do in six.
There is one additional possibility that Justin will like. Unlikely but possible. Since the Republican party is already so far behind the 8-ball and unpopular due to the policies of the Bush administration, (70% think the country is going in the wrong direction), and either Romney or McCain as a nominee will experience “tissue rejection” from a significant segment of the GOP itself, we may be looking at the end of the Republican Party as a relevant political force.
A Romney v Clinton contest is likely to bring Bloomberg/Hagel into the race. History shows that there is no path for a 3rd party to succeed in our system. However there are precedents for one of the two major parties self-destructing and being replaced by a new second party. Problem being, you have to blow up one to make room for the new. This may be the year that happens. It would be a fitting legacy for George W Bush. The man who destroyed the Republican Party.

Good, maybe the new party will take up the role the old republican party used to fill. Limited government, low taxes, non-aggressive.
