By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Independents, McCain, Polls, RepublicansA 2 point net jump since yesterday and the first time Obama has lead McCain by such a wide margin. It also represents the first time any candidate has reached the 49% mark in Gallup’s polling.

The question now: how long will it last?
A key question remains as to whether this “bounce” is short-term (as happens to bounces in some instances following intense publicity surrounding a convention) or if his lead will persist — the answer to which will become evident in the next several days.

The polling will shift again (margins either wider or more narrow) at two key points: announcing running mates and post-convention when the cadidates engage each other directly.

Nobody’s counting chickens. I post these numbers every single day to highlight the running tally. But I do think when both polls line up and show one candidate with a wider margin, that’s significant. It’s mostly just for trend analysis, that’s all.
